Wealthy donors, beautiful facilities, glamorous parties, big endowments—raising money for the arts must be a breeze, right? NOT SO. Sure, arts organizations have some advantages, but so do those organizations that have alumni, grateful patients, or a heart-tugging story to tell. Find out what practices your organization can adapt from the arts, and what arts organizations can learn from some other very vital nonprofits that raise funds successfully without the advantages of adorable animals, famous works of art, or stirring musical performances.

When thinking about a capital campaign, the question that is always on the minds of board and staff members for every organization is, “Are we ready?” During this session, John and Bob will use their recent experiences with the Ivy Tech campus expansion and capital campaign to look at the critical steps needed to be ready for a capital campaign from both the client’s and the consultant’s point of view.

Are your funders saying your organization needs a strategic plan, but your board and staff aren’t sure it’s worth the effort? Or aren’t even sure what the strategic planning process involves? Philanthropy is the linking of visions—both the donors’ and the institution’s vision—in a desire to make a difference. When we speak of “donor” we mean more than the individual who “writes the check.” Often, the term “donor” involves the entire family. As a member of a family involved in his mother’s vision to make a major gift to the Rhinehart Music Center at IPFW, Dr. Rhinehart has been part of this linking of visions and he will share his thoughts on making a gift that makes a difference.

From Twitter and Facebook to instant communications via email, text, and video messaging, relationship building and fundraising paradigms are rapidly changing. All predictions are that within the next ten years the majority of donations will occur online. Is your organization prepared to survive and thrive? This session will explore the rapidly changing landscape of the “interconnected age” from the need for a web presence to social networking, and provide attendees with strategies for embracing this new frontier without fear.

Too often, organizations waste money that could otherwise be spent on their mission or better ways to increase donor gifts. Drawing lessons from the book Donor Centered Fundraising by Penelope Burk, personal experience, and local donor surveys and interviews, John will discuss the effectiveness of various kinds of donor recognition for corporate and individual donors. Look for a surprisingly honest discussion of what works and what doesn’t.

Recent work within the religious fundraising community has furthered the donor-centered approach. It has also fostered new debate within the overall fundraising community about whether the person who does development work raises generous people or generous gifts as a first priority. Mark will detail the differing trajectories in these two approaches and offer insight into the religiously-motivated giver, regardless of where their gifts are directed.
